 A SET: Francisca

All these things have you said of beauty.

Yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisfied,

And beauty is not a need but an ecstasy.

It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth,

But rather a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted.

It is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear,

But rather an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears.

It is not the sap within the furrowed bark, nor a wing attached to a claw,

But rather a garden forever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.

People of Orphalese, beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.

But you are life and you are the veil.

Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.

But you are eternity and you are the mirror.

Khalil Gibran

In 1995 my wife and I spent two happy weeks in England and France. One morning we were strolling along a wide sidewalk in an upscale part of London. The weather was cool, but the patchwork sky splashed the city in occasional sunshine.

We had walked from a subway stop; I no longer remember where we were headed (or where we had come from). I do recall a row of clean stately buildings lining both sides of the avenue.

There was a constant flow of foot traffic coming from the opposite direction, but not enough to make us feel crowded. Most of the pedestrians were well dressed and appeared to be locals on unknown quotidian missions. Hardly any of them bothered to look at us, two obvious, swivel headed tourists from America.

I don’t remember which of us saw her first. She was impossibly tall, perhaps over ix feet. She was blond, with a perfect tan complexion. Lit by the mid morning sun, her unblemished face a mask of fearful symmetry. She strode toward us on long, elegant legs like some proud, ancient goddess, her mesmerizing movie star eyes staring directly at us for a single,  exhilarating instant. I like to imagine she gave us the barest hint of a smile.

“My goodness!” Virginia exclaimed after the beauty had passed us, “she was so beautiful.” I was quite literally breathless. It took considerable willpower to keep from stopping, turning around and gawking at the woman .

In the everyday world if I see a beautiful woman I am both aroused and saddened  As I surreptitiously look at her body and face,  in that instant I feel a  visceral desire for her yet also know I can’t possess her. She passes by; her mundane attractiveness soon mostly forgotten, replaced by the next pretty woman who, too, falls out of mind quickly.

With the unknown London woman I never felt desire or a yearning to possess her. Her beauty was so outrageous, so far surpassing anything I had ever seen, I was drenched in sudden and simple joy. In those few seconds she shared the sidewalk with us, and for a considerable period of time thereafter,  I  felt light and happy.

I have had the same joyful emotions when I have discovered a stunning natural vista or a marvelous painting or other work of art. The experience of such things overwhelm all thought and summon up selfless feelings of awe. One minutes life is its usual nondescript self, then the road curves and you are blasted by the glorious vastness of the Grand Canyon. That same instantaneous wash of joyfulness also overcame me the first time I saw the large original of Serat’s Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grande Jatte in the Chicago Institute of Art.

Sixteen years later that London Woman still summons lingering, mnemonic  joy.

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing…

My wife is a redhead. My last one was, too. My college heartthrob was a ginger as was my my sultry high school girlfrend. So was my favorite elementary school teacher.  Even my two siblings are carrot tops. I like redheads. A lot.

It isn’t easy being a left wing, liberal, NPR listening, New York Times reading, America hating elitist outcast in the deep red environment of east Tennessee. For every one like me there are dozens who believe Obama is a Muslim born Kenyan fiendishly dedicated to destroying our freedoms. No amount of evidence will dissuade these poor Rush Limbaugh believing folk.

Since his election Obama has said virtually nothing about gun control. He’s proposed no legislation. He’s done essentially nothing to advance the cause. Yet, the right wing fanatics are still buying up guns and ammo. The NRA accused Obama of intentionally letting firearms be shipped to Mexico as part of a plot to outlaw guns in a second term.

Obama has deported more aliens than Bush did. He’s escalated the “War on Terror” and embraced the unending detention of “terrorists” without trial. Yet the right way bloggers bleat he’s “giving away America”.

The President has proposed large cuts in entitlement programs and to the overall budget. He’s presided over a significant reduction in the government’s workforce.  Yet the Right continues to declare he’s a big spender who wants to grow the federal government.

And, of course, the majority of Americans have now forgotten who got us into the our deep recession. “George Bush? Hmm. Can’t really remember him.”

During the time I’ve been here, Maryville has grown from a sleepy small town to a bustling small city with all the ills of urban life: horrible traffic, inadequate infrastructure, and chronic budget deficits. Yet the same Good Old Boys’ network continues to cling to power. There are signs this may change, but it isn’t clear who will take over.

People here still want to post the Ten Commandments in the courthouse and pray in public schools. Still, there has been some progress. Gay students in many public schools now feel safe to come out. Blacks face less discrimination than when I first came here 37 tears ago. On the other hand, Hispanics have become the frowned upon minority and a target of police harrassment. Driving While Brown is the new Driving While Black.

Oh well…

I was contacted lately by an older woman who needed a lawyer. “I don’t want one of those redneck, church going conservative lawyers,” said declared. When I assured her I was probably the most liberal, areligious  lawyer in the county she hired me on the spot. Even better, she sent me a very nice check…

Not Obama Girl, but she’d sure get my vote whatever her politics!

OK. I’m an Apple Fanboy. Here’s my embarrassingly gushy post I wrote when I got my iPhone. Wednesday night my Wife gave me my Christmas present a bit early: a 32gig 3G iPad 2. She hasn’t seen me since. I’m so sick I woke at 5:30 AM yesterday – Thanksgiving Day – in anticipation of taking my Precious to my office to sync and load IOS5 (my home computer won’t upgrade iTunes. Don’t ask).

By 11:30 she was Alive! Alive!! Of course, I needed to buy a few things – a smart cover and screen protectors. Chalk up about sixty bucks (I love how any accessories for expensive things are always grossly overpriced). Once I got home I began madly downloading apps. What’s $2 here, $3 there, $5 around the corner? There is no end to web posts touting Top 17 iPad Apps! or Best iPad Apps for Left Handed Lawyers!

And, thanks to the glorious iCloud (is Steve Jobs up there with his iHarp?) all my iPhone apps magically appeared on my iPad, along with my contacts and calendars.

Stop! I could go on for hours, days, weeks… The only thing saving you from my ridiculous Apple babbling is my longing to be with my iBaby.
