Since the earliest days men inhabited Europe and much of Asia they feared the wolf with good reason. Even in medieval Europe and for several centuries thereafter,  the wolf remained the primary enemy of man. When our ancestors came to the new world it was no different. A wolf, or more to the point, a pack of wolves was a something terrible to encounter. Even today, in the American west, there is a struggle between those who wish to return the wolf to part of its original habitat and those who are descended from the wolf’s sometimes prey.
